In Memoriam: Brooks Sibley, Emeritus Professor of Forestry

Brooks Sibley, Emeritus Professor of Forestry died on June 12, 2023 at the age of 85. Professor Sibley not only taught forestry for over thirty years at Cal Poly Humboldt, he was also a member of the first graduating forestry class of the university. Read Professor Sibley's Obituary »


2022-2023 Scholarship Opportunities

It's Scholarship Time! There are a number of scholarship opportunities for Forestry & Wildland Resources students. Last year over $50,000 in scholarships were awarded to students in the department. Apply for many of these scholarships through Humboldt’s online scholarship application. The Humboldt Area Foundation 2021-2022 Ron Hoover Memorial Scholarship, James T. Brown Forestry Scholarship, and the Charles G and Helen W. Schober Memorial Scholarship application packets are now available online.

2021 Christmas Tree Sale

The Humboldt Forestry Club, Humboldt Logging Sports Club and CR Forestry Club are hosting a Christmas Tree Sale at Wildberries Marketplace in Arcata starting 12/2. Trees usually sell quickly, and the sale will continue until 12/17 or until sold out.  Hours of sales are 12pm-6pm daily.

Aidan Leaf Mullin Scholarship

The Aidan Leaf Mullin Memorial Scholarship was recently established to honor Aidan Leaf Mullin by supporting an annual scholarship to Cal Poly Humboldt students interested in how soils can foster sustainable agriculture.  Scholarship applications are due January 31st, all application materials should be submitted via Academic Works. An oral history of the Schatz Tree Farm, by Cole J. Nichols

For his senior thesis project Cole Nichols, a Forestry: Resotration major completed an extensive oral history of the Schatz Tree Farm. The project objective of this project was document the knowledge and experiences of the long-term manager of the Schatz Tree Farm, Gordon Schatz, in order to better understand the land management objectives for the Tree Farm, and to help guide and inform future management plans that may be developed.

2019 Spring Awards Banquet and Logger Ball

The combined Spring Awards Banquet and Logger Ball was held Saturday night, April 13th, at Veteran Hall in Arcata. The Forestry Club ran both events and did a marvelous job.

At the Banquet, the Department awarded $78,000 in scholarships to over 50 of our students. All of this money comes from the generosity of our alumni. Award winners included Imri Vasale (Academic Excellence), James Lamping (Professional Promise), Sierra Berry and Tiffany Perez (Rangeland Resource Science

Outstanding Student Award). Dr. Kevin Boston was voted Teacher of the Year by the students.

2019 Redwoods Rising Apprenticeships

Applications for the 2019 Redwoods Rising Apprenticeship program are due Friday, February 22nd. Redwoods Rising is a new and unique collaboration between the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Redwood National Park, and Save the Redwoods League that integrates multiple disciplines to achieve landscape-scale ecosystem restoration.
