Minors
Five minors programs are administered by the Department.
Forestry Minors
Fire Ecology Minor
The minor in Fire Ecology develops fundamental forestry concepts of woody plant identification and forest ecology as well as more specialized knowledge of the ecology, behavior, and suppression of forest fire. Course themes include:
- Forest ecology
- Woody plant identification
- Fire ecology
- Fire behavior and suppression
Forestry Minor
The minor in Forestry draws from the biological, physical, social, and managerial sciences. The curriculum aids in understanding the biological complexities of the forest and the interactions between the forest and social and economic demands.
Watershed Management Minor
The minor in Watershed Management develops a focus on watershed processes and the interactions between the geophysical, biological, and socioeconomic factors in bounded geographic drainage basins. The interplay between watershed processes and the management of other natural resources is integral to these studies. Course themes include:
- Economics
- Geomorphology
- Soil science
- Wildland hydrology and watershed management
Rangeland Resource Science Minors
Rangeland Resource Science Minor
The minor in Rangeland Resource Science will qualify students to be a Rangeland Technician. The curriculum aids in understanding the diverse set of benefits derived from rangelands. Course themes include:
- Conservation
- Soil science
- Rangeland plant communities
- Rangeland ecology
- Rangeland resources
Wildland Soil Science Minor
The minor in Wildland Soil Science provides for a better understanding of the uncultivated, natural soils that support herbaceous and woody plant communities. The curriculum aids in understanding the diverse ecosystems in California, as well as throughout North America and the world. This minor can qualify students to be a Soil Scientist. Course themes include:
- Origin and classification of soils
- Soils management
- Geomorphology
- Soil fundamentals
