Get Involved

You’ll have the opportunity to have fun, meet people, and apply your knowledge to real-world issues like land management, wildland fires, and sustainable forestry.

Here are a few ways to get involved:

American Water Resources Association - Student Chapter

The mission of the Water Resources Club is to engage interested students in everything pertaining to water resources including fisheries, hydrology, watershed restoration, river ecology, and much more. We work to connect students with local agencies and nonprofits, and provide opportunities to get involved with hands-on restoration. Every year, students in the Water Resources Club receive funding to attend the annual Salmonid Restoration Federation conference, an excellent opportunity to network with employers and stay current on the latest research in watershed and fisheries management. We also host movie nights, backpacking trips, fundraisers, and a variety of other fun and interesting activities.

Forestry Club

For more than 50 years, the Cal Poly Humboldt Forestry Club has held the proud tradition of donating to scholarships, hosting educational events, and organizing networking opportunities for its members. Through guest speakers, volunteering in the community, and planning fundraisers, we strive to do our best for the betterment of our graduates, our career field, and the entire Humboldt community. We pride ourselves in our variety of fun and beneficial events for our club members including resume and cover letter workshops, bonfires and social outings, annual Christmas tree sale, and annual Logger Ball.

Logging Sports

The Logging Sports team uses traditional logging equipment to practice and compete in athletic events that are rooted in historical logging practices. We travel to competitions across the west, participate in outreach and education, and help prepare our forestry students for a career in the forest industry. Our team members include students from other majors.

Range and Soils Club

The Range and Soils club aims to spread awareness and inspire students to be passionate about land stewardship and America's rangelands. Members fundraise for the Range Plant Identification Team (RRS 475) which travels to the Society for Range Management each year to compete. They also fundraise for the Soil Judging Team (SOIL 480) which travels to competitions throughout the school year. The Range & Soils club is a great way to get in touch with those in the major, learn about employment opportunities, and get involved with local land owners. Many employment opportunities are with government agencies and this club can help you with your applications! The club aims to volunteer and fundraise within the community helping ranchers and producers whenever it can.

Logger Ball

The Logger Ball is an opportunity for students to mix with alumni. It features live music, dancing and a raffle.

Society of American Foresters - Student Chapter

The Cal Poly Humboldt student chapter of Society of American Foresters (SAF) is dedicated to bringing the best science and the best people together to actively shape the future of the forestry profession. SAF club attends the National SAF Convention every year and competes in Quiz Bowl, a Jeopardy-style, forestry-based trivia competition. They also have social events such as bowling nights which connect students, alumni, and potential employers to assist in obtaining summer jobs and professional experience.

Student Association of Fire Ecology

The Student Association for Fire Ecology (S.A.F.E.) is a student club for advancing and grounding our Humboldt education with practical application and fire management training. We frequently welcome guest speakers, put on fundraisers and resume building workshops, and participate in fire ecology conferences, as well as help get our members ready for the fireline by getting them redcarded, providing physical training tips, and mentoring them with fire terminology and fireline scenarios. We also send members to prescribed burns and trainings, and within the last year, launched an 11-person prescribed fire module to be utilized for local burns. This provides opportunities for students to bridge the gap between field experience and education, and take their degree outdoors towards a career in fire ecology, management, and utilization.

Xi Sigma Pi

The Society of Xi Sigma Pi is a national organization with 43 active chapters. Cal Poly Humboldt joined as the Alpha Lambda Chapter in 1973. As a club, we work to secure and maintain a high standard of scholarship in forest resource management education, to work for the improvement of the forestry profession, and to promote a fraternal spirit among those engaged in activities related to forest resources. Being a member of Xi Sigma Pi looks great on a resume and gives you a competitive edge when it comes to federal employment.
