Job description

As a rangeland management specialist, I manage grazing allotments on Forest Service lands, which includes: managing grazing permits, vegetation monitoring, endangered species monitoring, restoration and development of lands, ecological monitoring, managing the district stock program (I get to ride a horse for work!) and weeds management.

Why did you choose this program?

The Rangeland Resource Science program is the only undergraduate program of its kind in the state and I knew I wanted to stay in-state. The program is small and offered me hands-on experience as well as professional development opportunities.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

The Rangeland Resource Science degree outline meets every requirement needed to qualify as a rangeland management specialist for federal agency employment, so I knew when I entered the program that upon graduation I would not only qualify for federal agency positions, but I would also have the hands-on experience needed to jump right into my job.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

The RRS program at Humboldt has a familial feeling to it. The program is small, so you easily get to know other students in the program, and the faculty and staff care about your success. They take the time to develop curriculum that will be relevant in the "real world" and will always put in extra time when help is needed. The extracurricular activities associated with the RRS program, such as Range & Soils Club and Plant I.D. Team, open up opportunities for professional development and networking through their involvement with the Society for Range Management.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

This program has a reputation for turning out great rangeland specialists! You will not find another undergraduate program like this in the state! Humboldt is a beautiful place to attend school, the friendships, connections, and professional networking are priceless, and the care and attention you will receive from RRS faculty and staff is beyond amazing.
